Welcome to the Compass Music Blog.
Hi. My name is Géraldine Zanaska, I am a French citizen from Paris who decided to make London her home ten years ago. I have been attracted to the UK and its music scene for as long as I can remember: I spent my teenage years with a poster of Glastonbury festival above my bed and the NME magazine as my constant bedside read. After studying for an Event & Arts Management degree in Paris, I decided to make the move to the Big Smoke to finally pursue my dream. I enrolled for a Master of Arts in Music Business Management at the University of Westminster in London. I didn't know a single soul in the city when I arrived, but a sure goal of mine was to go and see all the bands I could in all the venues I could. Gigs led to others which led to making new friends and slowly but surely I started building my network, landing my first door shifts, my first internship, my first show to rep and so on and so forth.
Fast forward a few years and I've worked in many areas of the music industry, from a record label to live music promoters, to an export office, a booking agency, as a PR and for an iconic music venue. I booked shows by award-winning artists in a listed ex-ballroom turned library, on Trafalgar Square, and for the London Olympics. I co-promoted a two days world music festival, and booked artists for another one that run in the London Overground. I organised countless showcases and B2B events for the music industry, from Sweden to Brighton. I attended a bazillion music conferences and two bazillion gigs around Europe.
The center point of my career has always been to work with international bands. I've worked with bands from Iceland to Canada, France, Brazil, Algeria, Togo, and many more.
At the beginning of 2019, I decided to quit my job to start my own music agency and consultancy, Compass Music. I want it to be a hybrid company, in order to fit with the fast changing music industry and world! Part-music export consultancy, part creative agency and part event agency, Compass Music's aim is to guide its clients towards international development, may it be for your music, your company, your event or your organisation. We will provide guidance, practical tools and bespoke services, from project management to events booking and beyond.
Helping music cross borders have been the cornerstone of my career and I look forward to this new journey. On this blog I intend to share my insights about the fast evolving different music markets around the world and how to go about them, music marketing tips as well as tips on how to start your own journey into the music industry. Feel free to comment on what specific subjects you would be interested to learn about more and I will endeavour to explore them in this blog.
Finally, get in touch if you would like to discuss your project. I will be happy to answer your questions.
